Paris. Impemerie (unreadable) passage du Cairo 56. ) Lith. H. Jannin Paris. Probably 1840s. Folding board game in a box. Unfolded board game 48 x 48 cm. Box 26 x 26 x 4 cm. Colour printed and hand coloured lithograph.

Paper board box coverd in maroon paper and gilt paper along the edges of the lid. A decorative title label on the top of the lid depicting China and different means of transportation. The back of the board game is covered in patterned maroon paper. The hinges in green cloth. A string is attached to the bottom of the box for easy removal of the board game. Some wear and fading to the box. The lid with some breaks and a large stain, a small part of the title label is missing. The game rules label has a couple of stains. The bottom part of the box has a crack on one side.

The goal is to go to the forbidden city of Beijing. The player can start from a number of European cities such as Rome, Madrid, Vienna, St. Petersburg, Brussels, Paris, London and Constantinople. The board is beautifully coloured with large views in the corners and across the board numerous depictions of locomotives (Stevensons three axel patentee model), air ballons, horse riders, sail ships and in the centre the forbidden city of Bejing with four gates guarded by chinese soldiers. The game rules are pasted onto the inside of the lid in french, spanish and english. There is quite a lot of empty space in the box which suggests that the game originally came with an assortment of game pieces. They are no longer present.
