[[Portrait] Salmson, Axel Jakob]
Maximilian Romersk Kejsare
[Stockholm] [Tr. hos Salmson & Ström. A. J. Salmson Lith] [1847 -1854] 32 x 24,5 cm. Lithograph. The technique used to colour the plate is quite advanced, a combination of lithochrome printing, hand colouring and tinting.
A small paper loss in the lower margin.
The plate was published in one of the most beautiful swedish plate books of the 19th. century Rikssalen på Gripsholms Slott (The National Hall at Gripsholm Castle), depicting paintings of the swedish king Gustavus I and his european contemporaries such as Elisbeth I, Henry VIII and Kristian II and others. The hand colouring and the lithochrome printing is of very high quality, rivaling fine contemporary continental works of the same kind. Lithochrome printing is an early form of lithographic colour printing. Salmson pioneered colour printing in Sweden. Salmson and C. F. Ström opened a lithographic printing business in 1847. In1851 the companionship ended and Salmson continued by himself. In the early 1860s he had to leave the country because of financial problems. He settled in the USA. Scarce.
