Martin, J. F.

Jonas Alströmer [and] Baron Patric Alströmer [and] Bar. Clas Alströmer.

[1782 - 1783] Plate marks 12-12,5 cm x 8,5 cm. The whole sheets 19,5-21 cm x 12,5-14 cm. Hand coloured stipple engravings.

Jonas Alströmer with a couple of creases into the image area and some browning to the margins after a former passe partout. The portrait also has a discreet water stain.

Here we have three fine portraits of Jonas Alströmer and his two sons Clas and Patric. They were published for the exclusive work "Svenska Galeriet, eller portraiter af märkvärdige svenske herrar och fruntimmer" by Johan Fredrik Martin. Twelve important swedish personalities were depicted in two installments. Most copies were uncoloured, but here we have rare examples of original hand colouring. Jonas Alströmer is famously known for popularising the potatoe in Sweden. He also modernised the swedish factory system and was one of the founding fathers of the "Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences". His sons continued the work of their father and were very active in the fields of science, commerce and culture. They were both ennobled and both became members of the Academy.
