1737. 37,5 x 52 cm including margins. Cut inside the plate mark with 2-5 mm of margin left. Engraving.

A little loss in the right margin. Creases. A few short tears. Margins partly reinforced at the back. Paper somewhat thinned in a few places at the back. Two folds.

A beautiful portrait of Philibert Orry (1689-1747) by Lépicié after an original by Hyacinthe Rigaud. The engraving depict Orry standing in front of his desk in a rich and beautiful apparel holding a book and a note to the king. Philibert Orry was a french statesman and economist, appointed Controller-General of Finances in 1730 and director of the Batiments du Roy (the King´s real estate) in 1736. Orry was also responsible for the upgrade of the nations road system which became the finest in Europe under his plan. Francois Bernard Lépicié (1659-1743) was a french engraver. Hyacinthe Rigaud (1659-1743) was a baroque painter known for his exactness in capturing his subject and their costumes, which makes his paintings perfect records of contemporary fashion. Rigaud was one of the finest portrait painters of his time, depicting virtually all of the french nobility as well as foreign royals, ambassadors and dignitaries for more than half a century.
