Japanese Pictoral Post Cards printed in Colours from Wooden Blocks Peculiar to Japan (..).

Series No. 4 Printed by Shimbi Shoin publishers of fine art works. 52 Nichmachi, Shitayaku, Tokyo, Japan. Early 20th century. 10 x 15 cm. 6 coloured post cards in an original envelope with title and maker. Wood block printing.

A few minor creases and spots to the envelope. The cards in very nice condition.

The Tokyo based company Shimbi Shoin was founded around the turn of the century 1900 and closed in the late 1930s. Their production was of the highest quality and comprised all sorts of art reproduction. The depictions are traditional japanese views. .A text on the envelope reads "Pictures taken from Paintings by Hiroshige, the Ukiyoye School" . The back of the cards have no dividing line which indicate that they are quite early, not later than 1907 according to some sources. The text on the back reads "Union Postale Carte Postale".
