A plate in beautiful hand coloring from the famous work "Kongl. Svenska Arméens Uniformer", (The Uniforms of the Royal Swedish army) by Adolf Schützercrantz. An early swedish lithographic plate book. The present plate is one of the two classic fold out lithographs in the book. The book is a great rarity and loose plates are very scarce, especially the fold outs. Adolf Schützercrantz was an officer, sketch artist, lithographer and painter. He specialized in military scenes and landscape views. The plates were printed by Carl Müller, who introduced commercial lithography in Sweden with Ludwig Fehr in 1818. The image was drawn by the painter Alexander Clemens Wetterling, before his stay in Italy where he spent several years along with other swedish artists, such as Hjalmar Mörner and Carl Jacob Lindström. The french artist Vernet was at this time head of the french art academy in Rome and became friend with Wetterling who was heavily influenced by the excellence of Vernet. Wetterling is a pioneer in swedish lithography, and a well known caricature artist. Rare.
