[Map] Ljunggren, Gustaf

Karta öfver staden Söderköping med dertill lydande egor på föranstalltande af Commitén till undersökning af grunderna till städernas beskattning efter vederbörligt förordnande upprättad af Gustaf Ljunggren. År1854.

[Stockholm] Lith. Inst. af Th. Warnecke & Co. 1854. 42 x 32 cm. With margins 60 x 47 cm.

Fine condition. Large margins.

A beautiful hand colored map of Söderköping and its environs, a town in the district of Östergötland in mid Sweden. The map has an inset of the centre of the town in the left lower corner. In the upper left corner a table showing the distribution of farm- and wood lands, population etc. The map was shown and approved by the town council in 1854. The map was then published in "Atlas öfver Sveriges Städer" (Atlas of swedish towns) in 1862, which contained 89 maps alltogether. It was also sold as a single sheet. Gustaf Ljunggren started to work on the maps to the atlas in the early 1850s. In 1855 the publishing house Bonniers bought the rights and continued the work under Ljunggrens superintendence. The same year some of the maps were awarded at the World Exposition in Paris. The government supported the project by guaranteeing a purchase of 1.300 copies of each map. All the maps were colored by "Koloröser", women cololorists, in a wonderful mild tone, almost as in aquarell painting.
