[Map] Vaugondy, Robert de

[China] L´Empire de la Chine dressé d´après les cartes de l´Atlas Chinois.

Par le Sr. Robert de Vaugondy Geographe ordinaire du Roi. Avec privilege. 1751. Plate mark 49,5 x 54 cm. The whole leaf 57 x 75,5 cm. Engraving. Original hand colouring in outline.

Printed on thick quality paper. Large margins. "Chine" and the number "93" on the back of the map. A couple of small ink stains at the upper edge of the map. The middle fold has a discreet parallel fold along most of its length.

A fine map of China and Korea with a beautiful cartouche depicting chinese musicians, vases, flowers etc; giving a very vivid feeling of chinese life. The provinces are delimited by different colours in outline. The map was issued for the first edition of "Atlas Universel" published by Robert Vaugundy (1723- 1768). An early example of french scientific carthograpy in the school of D´Anville and De L´Isle, no decorative elements on the map just the surveyed lands.
