[Colour plate] [Braun, Georg / Hogenberg, Franz]

Stocholm [Stockholm]

[Cologne] [Ca. 1600] Frame 26 x 55 cm. Engraving in original hand colouring. An opening in the support board at the back make parts of the text on the verso of the engraving visible in a quite nice way.

Gilt frame. Greyish mat / passe partout. New margins at the top. Not examined out of the frame. A couple of pin holes. Slight discolouration along the centre fold. Some dents and nicks to the frame.

A view of Stockholm from the south, standing at what is now Mosebacke. In the centre we have Slussen, to the left lake Mälaren and to the right the Baltic Sea.The original plate had two views, one from the south and one from the north. At some point the plate was cut in two halves separating the two views leaving us with the one from the south. It was issued for the great city atlas "Civitates Orbis Terrarum" published 1572 to 1617 containing hundreds of views of cities from around the world. The Civitates was intended as a companion to Abraham Ortelius great world atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum" published in 1570. In effect, the first modern atlas. This is arguably the earliest printed view of Stockholm.
