[Map] Colton

Minnesota and Dakota

Published by J. H. Colton, 172 William St. New York. Ca 1858-1860. Map 35 x 42 cm. Frame 49,5 x 56 cm. Hand colored lithograph.

Brown frame. Off white mat. A few dents to the frame. Slight browning to the map margins. Nice condition.

An interesting map of Minnesota just after statehood in 1858. The western part of what was the Minnesota territory was left unorganized to become North- and South Dakota about thirty years later. The map quite clearly show the settlements in the south eastern part of the state and large only rudimentary organized tracst of land to the north and the west. Some rail road lines takes off into the western wilderness. A text at the top left reads "The vast region of prairies from Red River of the North and Mini Walcan L. to about the Gr. Bend of the Missouri R. is the great Hunting and Fighting Ground of the Dakota, Odjibwe, Assiniboin, Arikara, Minitarree and other Nations". These nations and all other indian tribes in the area where just about to go under crushed by a relentless wave of european settlers - many of them swedish - taking no consideration to the original custodians of the land or the land itself. A genocide and a land rape of historic proportions.
