[Atlas] Barbou, J.

Atlas, et tables élementaires de géographie, ancienne et moderne, adopté par plusieurs Écoles Royales Militaires. Nouvelle edition.

A Paris, chez J. Barbou, rue des Mathurins. MDCCLXXXIII (1783) Large 8:o. 19 x 13,5 cm. VI pp. (including the title) + 98 columns on 49 pages + 20 engraved maps, hand coloured in outline, one map uncoloured.

Blue paper board binding. Private library markings at the front paste down and fly leaf. From the library of the swedih noble man Jacob Pontusson de la Gardie, with his book plate on the front paste down. Very worn binding with paper loss. Rubbed, bumbed corners. A couple of minor nk stains at the maps. The map of France with tears in the lower margin, a repair and in a bit rough state. Overall nice and clean interior.

The atlas contains basic maps of the contemporary and the ancient world with brief text descriptions. The small and simplistic format makes it the ideal companion to bring to a café when traveling or when out and about in any capacity. It was probably intended for primary educational use. The maps were engraved by M. André after designs by M. Briou. It was published in several editions at the end of the 18th century, evidently quite popular.
