Gilt frame. Green passe partout. Not examined out of the frame. A couple of small dents to the frame. Very nice condition.
A fine image executed by the great Benjamin Fawcett, a genius wood engraver. He collaborated for many years with Francis Open Morris who wrote among many other things books on natural history and birds. They were very successful together and their works have become british classics. The present plate was published for "A History of British Birds". The first edition was published in 1850-1857. Several editions were published throughout the rest of the 19th. century. It is not clear to which one the present plate was issued since all have hand coloured plates.
