Biggareau Commun [Pomologie Francaise]

[Paris] De l´Impremerie de Langlois. Poiteau Pinx. Bouquet Sc. [1846] Plate mark 31 x 24,5 cm. The whole sheet 42 x 29,5 cm. Stipple engaved plate, printed in colour and finished by hand.

A wter stain in the lower margin. A few very faint brown spots. A very short tear to the upper margin.

A fine plate depicting the "Biggareau Commun" (White Hart Cherry). It was published for the great fruit book "Pomologie Francaise" in 1846. Proabably the finest fruit prints ever published. It is a high point in the art of colour printed stipple engravings, a very specialized and difficult process that the printer Langlois fully mastered. The result is remarkable. Langlois had earlier printed plates for Redouté. Pierre Antoine Poiteau wa a botanist of the finest order and the accuracy of his art has never been surpassed. Poiteau and Turpin first published the plates in "Traité des Arbres fruitiers", 1807-1835. Poiteau published the final version without Turpin in 1846 - "Pomologie Francaise". Rare.
