A portrait of the french king Henry IV - the first monarch of the House of Bourbon - who ruled 1589 - 1610. He was born a hugenot but when becoming king he found it prudent to abjure his protestant faith. He was a liberal ruler famously remembered for the Edict of Nantes, which guaranteed religious freedom for protestants. He was assassinated by a catholic fanatic.
