Laterna Magica

Laterna Magica slides.

Ca. 1850-1900. Glasses 8 x 8 cm. Frames 9 x 18 cm. Mahogany frames Hand painted glass.

The frames have paper labels with hand written numbers. Some nail holes to the edges and little dirt to the frames. Small pieces of wood missing from two of the frames. One frame with a couple of cracks to the wood. Some pin hole size losses of paint and a few minor scratches to the images.

The slides depict: a sailing ship in a storm, a water mill in a wintery landscape with a castle in the background, a cross on a hill in front of Jerusalem (?), a large cross inside a cathedral, a large cross with the sky as back drop. These slides were made for a Laterna Magica, which is a device with a light source within, projecting the images of the slides on a wall. Laterna Magica shows were very popular in the 19th. century before film was invented and photography had not yet became main stream.
