Consolidtated mines in Cornwall was in operation during the first half of the 19th century and was for some time the largest copper producer in Cornwall and highly profitable. The mine was commonly called the Consols or the great Consols. The copper was exhausted in the 1850s and the mine closed. For some time it employed 3000 people including children, an 8 year old boy was killed in an accident in 1831. The mine constantly struggled with ground water and a succession of pumps were installed, among them the worlds largest steam engine in the 1820s. This is an early english lithographic map, a printing technique that was introduced in England in the beginning of the 19th century. It was only in the 1820s lithography became popular, in large part thanks to Joseph Hullmandel who printed the present map. Maps in lithography are uncommon from this early period since map makers generally were slow to use the new medium. Engraved maps were more accurate. The map is reduced from an 1819 map by Richard Thomas.
