Nord-Amerika.
Braunschweig. Verlag von Fr. Vieweg & Sohn und George Westermann. 1850s. 28 x 30 cm. Colour printed and hand coloured maps executed in steel engraving and lithography.
Some tears and creases to the margins.
Two maps of North America, one political and the other physical. The maps were published in the Liechtenstern - Lange school atlas. The atlas went through ca 90 editions between 1853 and 1892 and was a standard work in german schools for many years. The names and mountains are steel engraved and, according to Espenhorst, the political map is hand coloured while the yellow ochra on the physical map is printed in lithography. This was the first time a combination of steel engraving and lithography was used in a carthographic work. (Espenhorst, Jürgen, Petermann´s planet 34.2).
