[Colour Plates] Ny Illusterad Tidning

Det Stockholm som går [and] Det Stockholm som kommit

[Stockholm] Ca 1878. Ca 26 x 37 cm. Recently hand coloured wood engravings.

A couple of corner folds. Nice condition.

The Swedish Royal Library was housed in the Royal Palace until 1878 when a new library building was opened. Here we have two illustrations published in Ny Illustrerad Tidning depicting interiors of the old and the new library. The old library seems to be a quite intimate and cramped place, people are almost stepping on each other. In contrast the new library is very spacious with its high ceiling neld up by cast iron pillars, almost industrial. In both images we can see the legendary chief librarian Gustaf Edward Klemming. The originals were drawn by Robert Haglund and Nils G. Janzon.
