The engraving was issued for the great topographical work "Suecia Antiqua et Hodierna". One of the most ambitious and far reaching book productions ever carried out in Sweden. It shows swedish towns, estates, views, monuments etc. When the officer Erik Dahlberg stayed in Frankfurt in the 1650s. to claim war retribution on behalf of the swedish government following the peace of Westpahlia, he was inspired by Merians topographical works At his return to Stockholm he secured a royal privilige to publish a swedish work along the lines of Merians. The work was started in the 1660s at the height of the the swedish period as a great european power. The intent was to show the greatness of the country. The complete work contains 354 plates and was finished in 1715. At that time all the wars were lost and the bid for a leading role in European politics was over. Many different engravers participated in the work. At first the originals were brought to Paris to be engraved. Later dutch artists were brought to Stockholm to do the work. The present plate was engraved by the dutch engraver Willem Swidde.
