A classic and beautiful view of the river Rhein and Cologne in the 1830s. The plate comes from a scarce set of romantic lithographs of the river Rhine, executed by the greatest lithographer Sweden has ever possessed. The plate is executed in the typical grainy black and white style of the 1830s. Billmark arrived in Paris as a young man and lived there for most of his life, working with the best artists and craftsmen of the time. He produced several lithographic albums of high quality, some depicting european sceneries and some sceneries of his native country. This work, as well as most others by Billmark, was printed by Lemercier in Paris. This copy is printed on china paper and then mounted on heavy paper. China paper was more expensive and - supposedly - of higher quality, than prints on regular paper.
