HB stands for John Doyle, an irish caricature artist who lived in London. He was a very well respected political comentator who published his work in The Times between 1829 and 1851. Many hundreds of his caricatures were also published as broad sheets such as the present. He introduced a new style of caricature drawing with more realistic figures in contrast to, for example, Thomas Rowlandson´s somewhat grotesque figures. Doyle has a more courteous and cleaver style.
