[Map] [Vandermaelen, Phillipe]

Partie du bas Canada [The map shows the mouth of the Saint Lawrence river in Canada. It was published for "Atlas Universel de Geographie Physique, Politique, Statistique et Mineralogique"]

[Brussels] [1827] The whole sheet 54 x 63 cm. Hand coloured in outline. Lithographed map. Folds once.

A few stains. Short separations of the fold at the margins.

The map shows the mouth of the Saint Lawrence river and the surrounding areas in great deail. In the centre the Quebec island of Anticosti flanked by parts of New Brunswick, New Foundland and mainland Quebec. The map is actually a very large globe gore. It is narrowing slightly towards the bottom. Vandermaelen´s "Atlas Universel" consists of six volumes containing close to 400 maps. They can be assembled to form a giant globe of almost eight meters in diameter. At the time it was the largest mapping of the world that had ever been made. The "Atlas Universel" is one of the earliest atlases to be produced in lithography.
